Mode: 5 Mistakes to Avoid
Finds the most frequent value(s). The maths is not complicated, but a handful of errors come up again and again in this and related math & geometry calculations. Here is what to watch for.
A quick mental estimate before calculating is a powerful check. If a room's floor area comes out at 4,000 square metres or a percentage comes out above 100% when it should not, you know to look again.
These calculations appear throughout the Singapore syllabus, from primary school percentages and fractions to secondary school algebra and geometry. Understanding the formula makes problem sums easier because you can recognise which quantity is missing.
1. Dropping negative signs
Signs matter for roots, changes and differences.
2. Using the wrong percentage base
A percentage change is measured against the original value, not the new one.
3. Confusing radius and diameter
Many circle formulas use the radius, which is half the diameter.
4. Forgetting the order of operations
Powers and brackets come before multiplication and addition.
5. Rounding too early
Rounding intermediate steps can throw the final answer off.
The correct method
The mode is the value that appears most often.
For example, with these inputs:
- Numbers (separated by commas): 12, 15, 9, 22, 15, 30
the calculator returns:
- Mode: 15
