Working Days: Your Questions Answered
These are the questions people ask most often about working days. Each answer is short; follow the links for the full detail.
What does a working days calculation tell me?
Counts weekdays between two dates, inclusive. Subtract any public holidays that fall on a weekday.
What is the formula?
Count Monday to Friday dates in the range.
What do I need to enter?
Start date, End date.
Does this count Singapore public holidays?
No. It counts calendar days or weekdays. Subtract any public holidays in the period yourself.
Can you show an example?
For example, with these inputs:
- Start date: 1 Oct 2026
- End date: 31 Oct 2026
the calculator returns:
- Weekdays (Mon–Fri): 22 days
- Calendar days: 31 days
Any tips?
- Public holidays are not weekends; subtract them separately when counting working days.
- Notice periods in employment contracts may be counted in calendar days or working days, so read the wording carefully.
- Months have different lengths, so 'one month' is not always 30 days.
Background
Age is calculated in completed years, months and days. Someone born on 29 February is usually treated as turning a year older on 28 February or 1 March in non-leap years, depending on the rule being applied.
Time durations are easier to handle in minutes. Convert each time to minutes after midnight, subtract, then convert back to hours and minutes, adding 24 hours for shifts that run past midnight.
When sharing dates internationally, write the month as a word to avoid confusion between day-month and month-day formats.
